CILT Cymru’s “Getting Started: Guidance to support the Introduction of a Modern Foreign language in Key Stage 2” (2008) was commissioned by the Welsh Government in order to disseminate the innovation and good practice which emerged from the National CILT Cymru Key Stage 2 Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Pilot Project (2003 - 2009). 

Primary pupils in Welsh + French dressIt is designed for use by primary, secondary schools and LEAs and by anyone with an interest in developing primary MFL. It provides practical step by step guidance on the introduction of a MFL in Key Stage 2, how this can complement and enrich the primary curriculum, support closer collaboration between schools thus enhancing transition links and helping pupils make accelerated progress in Key Stage 3.It also contains examples of good practice in current methodology, planning grids and useful contact details. The guidance can be used as desired, serving as an initial source of discussion between schools and / or LEAs and subsequently as a basis for co-operation, training and progression between schools, departments and key stages.
