Ioan Gruffydd

Ioan Gruffydd

Occupation: Actor - has starred in such films as Hornblower, Titanic and Solomon and Gaenor.
Languages: Welsh, English, Yiddish

Having been propelled from Cwmderi on Pobl y Cwm to international success in Titanic, Ioan is no stranger to foreign audiences. Ioan is internationally known for his role in the film Titanic as Fifth Officer Lowe, which grossed £1.1 billion  worldwide. No one could accuse the Hornblower star of not meeting Great Expectations in the film and television world.  As well as being proud of his Welsh roots and his bilingualism in Welsh and English, the star has widened his appeal even more by taking up a new challenge -learning Yiddish!

The star learned Yiddish for his role as Solomon in the film Solomon and Gaenor, which was nominated for Best Film in a foreign language at the 1998 Oscar ceremony. Ioan impressed by recording the film in Yiddish, Welsh and English! Perhaps Ioan is sharing some language learning tips with his friend, actor Mathew Rhys, who is currently learning Spanish.
