What is happiness and what’s knowledge for?

Blaenau-Gwent pupils discuss big issues in French and Spanish

MFL departments across Blaenau-Gwent are working with CILT Cymru on a project aimed at challenging year 8 pupils to think about ‘big’ issues in French and Spanish.

The project will see year 8 pupils across the county take as their starting point the recent UNICEF survey that sees UK children ranked bottom of a list of OECD countries showing how happy children feel. They will work in French and Spanish on discussing what makes us happy and use past tenses to explore what made them happy when they were little, and what made their parents and grandparents happy when they were children.

They will move on later this year to discuss the topic of knowledge – what it’s for and what types of knowledge we need for different purposes (including employability, and coincidentally, they’ll be looking at this just before they approach their options choices in year 9!). We’re hoping the increased challenge in both context and language will give the pupils confidence that they are capable of carrying on with MFL in Key Stage 4 and will increase numbers studying MFL in the county.

We will be putting examples of the work and progress reports on the secondary section of the website as the project progresses, so watch this space for further developments.
