Using the KS2 non-statutory framework for MFL

Modern Foreign Languages in the National Curriculum for Wales

“Pupils practise their language skills through enjoyable activities in a range of cross-curricular contexts which develop their self-confidence and creativity”.
(DCELLS - Key Stage 2: a non-statutory framework for modern foreign languages - 2008)

The revised national curriculum for MFL in Wales (September 2008) includes a non-statutory framework for Key Stage 2. The framework reflects the Key Stage 3 programme of study and therefore provides a sound basis for maintaining a continuum in foreign language learning and supports cross-phase planning.

Separate guidance on using the non-statutory framework, including guidance on using the level descriptors to support transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, is available from DCELLS here.

A DVD exemplifying oracy activities in the primary setting is also available as part of DCELLS guidance (MFL Guidance for Key Stages 2 and 3 - 2008).
