MFL Factfile
This publication, produced jointly by CILT Cymru and Governors
Wales, provides key facts about the teaching and learning of MFL
in primary and secondary education in Wales. It will be of particular
interest to 'link governors' who have a responsibility for overseeing
MFL matters in their schools, but may also serve as a source of
information for those with a more general interest in the subject,
perhaps as parents or as learners.

Started" Guidance to support the Introduction
of a Modern Foreign Language in Key Stage 2.

Assembly Government to disseminate the innovation and good
practice emerging from the KS2 MFL Pilot Project (2003-2009).
It provides step by step guidance, designed for primary, secondary
school or LEA staff, specialists and non-specialists alike,
wanting to introduce or develop provision of a MFL in KS2.
|
| |
| The pack focuses on:
- the benefits of an early start;
- building partnerships between clusters of primary and
secondary schools to facilitate provision of a MFL in KS2;
- accessing funding;
- good practice and ideas for classroom activities based
on the non-statutory framework for MFL in KS2;
- good practice in transition from KS2-KS3 and how secondary
schools can build on the early start

'Languages work' video |
| Have you heard people say that studying
a foreign language will only be useful if you want to become
a teacher or a translator? This video explodes those myths,
and shows young people the exciting career and lifestyle benefits
that can come their way if they learn another language. Indeed,
learning a language can even save lives! The video is aimed
at Key Stage 3 school pupils, particularly those who are about
to make option choices that may affect the rest of their lives.
Filmed both in Wales and abroad, it shows that whatever your
job or your interests, having some competence in a foreign language
offers you a vastly improved range of options. |
|
| One copy of the video is available
free of charge to all schools in Wales, and in order to obtain
further copies for £10, please contact CILT Cymru on 02920

MFL and Numeracy
As well as developing literacy skills, the study
of MFL also affords many opportunities to develop pupils' proficiency
with numbers. Iona Davies, Head of MFL at Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi, has
written a pack of materials which will allow you to do just that.
Commissioned by CILT Cymru and developed following a study tour
to France funded by GTCW, the materials are arranged in 4 sections.
