Introduction

Foreign Language Assistants:

  • are from a variety of countries in the French, German and Spanish- speaking worlds, bringing a fresh cultural perspective to language learning
  • help pupils meet National Curriculum requirements and raise the level of performance in oral examinations
  • give invaluable attention to individuals, pairs and groups and stimulate genuine communication in the target language

"The availability of a foreign language assistant contributes greatly to all aspects of a department's work, in particular to the development of speaking skills." OFSTED

Foreign Language Assistants also:

  • bring an international dimension to the curriculum and provide a ready source of authentic material and cultural diversity
  • update teachers' knowledge of the target language and culture.

"Foreign Language Assistants provide a stimulus to language teaching in a variety of ways. They are usually closer than most teachers to pupils' age, and can often share similar interests. They bring into the classroom information and resources about contemporary life and culture, such as pop music or sport. They enable pupils to see that the foreign language is spoken by real people, and they provide an additional teaching resource, particularly for encouraging speaking skills. Not least, they provide linguistic updating and refreshment for teachers, and encourage the use of the target language by the language department in front of the pupils."
Languages Count, The Welsh Assembly Government's National Modern Foreign Languages Strategy.
