SOURCES OF FUNDING

* NEW* Better Schools Fund April 2008-09
(next academic year)

For the first time, Priority 1C in next year's BSF is:
"The Introduction of a modern foreign language at Key Stage 2"

This area is therefore eligble for grant support via your LEA.

It is envisaged that clusters of schools work together with their local Comprehensive schools(s) to enrich KS2, support Transition arrangements and maximise impact at KS3.

Each LEA will have their own arangements/plans for this area of eligibility, so consult your local BSF representative to find out what possible activity is planned for schools within your authority.

MFL at KS2 will remain an Assembly Priority Area for 3 years:
2008-09
2009-10
2010-11

CILT Cymru will be running training courses for primary/secondary/peripatetic teachers, so keep an eye on the website for dates and venues...

ContinYou is a national charity promoting out-of-school and lifelong learning. Its Extra Time Mini Guides provide support, guidance, ideas and resources to schools and Local Authorities to help them run a range of successful subject-based study support/oshl clubs. Many of the ideas contained within the mini guides can also be used during formal curriculum time.

The new Extra Time Mini Guide for Modern Foreign Languages includes ideas and advice for schools wanting to set up a language club or introduce an international flavour to other clubs. The guide is available to download from the ContinYou website (go to the 3rd bullet point : Study Support ETC > Resources & case studies > Mini Guides > MFL) or go straight to the pdf.

Did you know that European Funding  is available to enable you to particiapte in courses lasting between one and four weeks, taking place in a country where the target language is spoken and taught? Find out if you are eligible.
  • Current Project schools – could you share your experiences to help reach other schools? GTCW funding is available for PROJECT and NON-PROJECT schools to share good practice in modern foreign languages

If we are to expand the idea of Primary languages as widely as we can into non-Project schools, we need teachers willing to share their experiences of the last 3 years of the KS2 Project. One of the major benefits of professional development projects such as those funded from the GTCW programme is the opportunity for teachers to share their experiences of ‘good practice’ with others and enthuse new schools to follow suit. The Council funding can help you do just this. Please contact us at the address below if you are interested.

Non-project schools interested in Primary languages - why do it alone?

During the last 3 years, there has been some excellent networking going on between clusters of Project schools. Why not benefit from their experience so far and form your OWN cluster to look into what can be achieved in primary languages? There may be a possibility of GTCW funding to help facilitate networking. This is from the current GTCW Journal (July 2005):

“Most teachers and schools find that undertaking CPD on their own can be slow and isolating, whereas working with others is both stimulating and supportive.

The Council’s Professional Development Programme offers teachers funding to explore the opportunity to work together through its Professional Network projects.

During the last 4 years some 300 networks have been funded, with an average of eight teachers involved in each.

To be funded, a network requires:

    - a minimum of 5 teachers from at least 3 schools
    - teachers to meet regularly, as a group, over a period of time to work on a common aspect of their practice

Funding can enable the network to ‘buy in’ expertise to meet their professional needs and pay for supply cover.

The Council is urging teachers to take advantage and apply, as all unspent funds are returned to the Assembly.

Contact the Professional Development team directly on: 029 2055 0350 or email: cpd@gtcw.org.uk or dpp@gtcw.org.uk

Let’s get the message out there.
