"GETTING STARTED "
Guidance to Support the Introduction of a Modern Foreign Language in Key Stage 2.
This pack has been produced by CILT Cymru specifically for schools and LEAs in Wales, and covers the key issues involved when considering introducing or developing a modern foreign language in Key Stage 2.
The good practice contained in the guidance is based on the experiences over the last 5 years of primary and secondary schools currently participating in the National Pilot with CILT Cymru and the Welsh Assembly Government (2003-09).
It is envisaged that clusters of schools will use the guidance as basis for their discussions. Working as a cluster has proved a most successful model and has reaped the most benefits during the course of the Pilot.
The guidance appears in 6 sections:

An INTRODUCTION to 'Getting Started' -
Foreword - Jane Hutt, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Skills.
Introduction - background to the development of the guidance.
Rationale - benefits of early language learning, building on bi-lingualism.

PART 1 - Making it Happen looks at the practical decisions that need to be discussed as a cluster/LEA such as which language, year group, model of delivery and so on.

PART 2- Good practice is divided in to 2 areas. It gives practical ways in which the study of a language and all it entails can really enrich the primary curriculum. It then provides guidance how to enhance transition arrangements and ways in which teachers can build on the early start in KS3.

PART 3 - The Next Steps provides practical checklists and cluster action plans to guide your next steps. They are relevant for primaries, secondaries and LEAs and can be tailored for individual situations.

PART 4 - Further Help and Support provides a current list of useful contacts for each LEA, training opportunities and CPD providers aswell as sources of resources.

Appendix - if you would like to find any of the documents referred to throughout the guidance. Acknowledgements
