French & German
Languages studied at university
Spanish & German (also French in 1st year)
University
University of Wales, Aberystwyth
Best thing about the course
The best thing about studying a foreign language is definitely the chance
to spend a year abroad! I would never have dreamed of taking a year out
of University to study abroad if it hadn't been part of my degree course.
Where did you spend your year out?
As I was a 'joint honours' student I had to spend time in both Spain and
Germany. I spent the first part of the year studying at a private University
in Madrid as part of an exchange programme and the second part of the
year studying at a private language school in Berlin.
Current job title
Business Development Manager
Do you think that the fact that you studied languages helped you to
obtain this post?
Unfortunately not!
Could you tell us more about the nature of the job outlining main
tasks and responsibilities?
I work for a local community regeneration organisation and am responsible
for developing its business and trading activities.
Do you use your languages frequently? If so, in which situations?
Unfortunately I don't use my languages as often as I would like! I am
speaking quite a bit of Spanish at the moment though - Some friends of
ours have recently bought a house in Northern Spain, which they are currently
renovating. As they don't speak Spanish I'm helping out by liasing with
the builders to make sure that everything's going ok!
What other jobs have you done since leaving university?
After graduating I moved straight to Madrid and worked as a Property/Relocation
Agent out there for 18 months before moving back to Wales. When I got
home I found a Project Management job through Cymru Prosper Wales before
moving to my current job.
What is the best thing about learning another language in your opinion?
The ability to visit or live in a foreign country and be able to communicate
easily with the natives. Speaking the language also gives you a completely
different perspective on the country's culture
