Do you think that your languages have helped you to get your
current post?
Definitely, languages are essential to work in an international organisation.
My language skills have been a huge advantage for me when working on European
Projects
Could you describe the nature of your post, underlining the main
tasks and responsibilities
I assist schools to establish curriculum projects with other
countries in Europe. I am also involved in professional training for educational
staff as well as on the Comenius Assistants programme which sends and
receives young teachers to and from Europe. The job can mean speaking
to schools, conferences, European Seminars as well as administrative work.
Do you use your languages often? If so, in which situations?
I do use my languages quite regularly, usually to contact other
similar agencies in Europe. I also use my Welsh a lot when speaking to
teachers in Wales.
Which other jobs have you done since leaving University?
I taught English in a high school in Galicia, Northern Spain between 2006-2007
under the British Council’s scheme
In your opinion, what is the best thing about learning another
language?
I believe that speaking another language broadens your horizons
and is a crucial way to understand a country or region’s culture.
Learnijng a language is also a great way to meet other people, make friends
and strengthen international relations which is so important in today’s
world.
What would you say to other young people who don’t wish
to contine with language learning?
Don’t give up learning a language, employers recognise
that competence in other languages is crucial and this is becoming more
and more obvious in the workplace today.
