Name: Gwenllian Lansdowne
Work: County Councillor for Plaid Cymru, Cardiff
Languages spoken: Welsh, English, French, Spanish, basic
Italian and a smattering of Arabic
Could you tell us more about the nature of the job outlining
main tasks and responsibilities?
I was elected to serve the Riverside Ward in 2004.
Being a Councillor involves taking on constituents' concerns and problems,
lobbying the Council and campaigning on important political issues.
Do you use your languages frequently? If so, in which situations?
Yes, I do use my languages quite a lot. My husband and I speak to each
other in French. My work involves using Welsh and English. I occasionally
use French or Spanish with constituents who feel more comfortable in those
languages. I e-mail friends in Spanish and I talk to my Mother-in-law
in my basic Italian!
What other jobs have you done since leaving university?
I have taught at University, have worked in Plaid Cymru's Policy Unit
and have completed a PhD in Political Theory. I now work as an Office
Manager for Leanne Wood AM.
What is the best thing about learning another language in your
opinion?
The best thing, without doubt, is being able to explore another culture
and way of life from within that culture.
What would you say to those who are reluctant to carry on with
their languages?
It can sometimes be hard as all languages require a degree of perseverance.
However, learning a new language brings with it all kinds of opportunities
and is a great asset.
