"Crossing Bridges" - Using languages to support transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3

ACCAC has recently published guidance, which supports transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 using languages.

A copy should now be with every Primary and Secondary school in Wales (January 2006)

Many thanks to all those CILT Cymru project and non-project schools involved in sharing their experiences and providing case-study material.

Across schools in Wales there is a strong focus on how pupils can be supported in their move from primary to secondary school. Traditionally MFL has been considered a ‘new’ subject in Key Stage 3. For some schools now however, pupils arrive having had one or more years of MFL teaching in their primary school.

“Crossing Bridges” supports closer collaboration between schools and highlights good practice. It is relevant to all schools, regardless of whether MFL is taught in the primary school. It aims to help all Key Stage 2 teachers support their pupils’ confident progress into secondary language learning and to help all Key Stage 3 MFL teachers build on their pupils’ prior language experience, whatever the language.

ACCAC worked closely with CILT Cymru on the project and many of the Key Stage 2 MFL pilot schools have provided excellent case study material.
