CILT Cymru Language Teaching Adviser Kristina Hedges recently attended a fascinating open day at Tile Hill Wood School in Coventry, where year 7 pupils are taught at least one subject through the medium of French. MFL teachers work closely with colleagues in other departments to deliver the subject in both French and subject lessons. Clearly goodwill and cooperation are of paramount importance, and teachers are given protected time to work together on lesson planning to ensure the success of the project. Pupils who have experienced this form of immersion appear to outperform their peers in all areas of the curriculum. CLIL (content and language integrated learning) is, of course, not new to Wales, where pupils from English speaking families have been successfully immersed into Welsh education when starting primary school and also in successful pilot immersion projects at yr 6 and 7. We feel strongly that we should harness this successful experience and try to introduce some form of immersion in MFL in Wales. If you would like to explore the possibilities of CLIL in your school, with the support of CILT Cymru, please contact Kristina. (can you hyperlink here to my e-mail?) You can find out more about CLIL on the CILT We look forward to hearing from you.
