Name:
Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan AM
Date of birth:
9th September 1939
Occupation:
First Minister for Wales
Languages:
English, Welsh, French, German (rusty), Spanish (a bit)
How did you learn these languages?
I learnt Welsh from the cradle, English on the street and in school, French
from age 11 and German from age 13 in secondary school. I learnt Spanish
from holidays and attending summer camp.
Does the fact that you speak other languages help
you in your role?
Yes undoubtedly, even when I only speak a few sentences.
Which countries have you visited? How did you communicate
with the people?
There are too many to list. I try to communicate in the local languages
wherever possible.
Do you think that Welsh people and Welsh speaking
people are more receptive to you because you speak the language?
Yes
Surely during your time as First Minister you have had the chance
to meet people from all over the world. With that in mind, which languages
in your opinion were the most prominent ones?
It's hard to judge but probably Spanish after English.
Which languages (apart from English) do you think
will be the main languages to do business with in the future?
Mandarin and Spanish
Would you encourage young people in Wales to carry
on with their language learning and why?
Yes as they bring vital communication skills, they break down barriers
and it's so much better than just speaking your own language. We can’t
rely on everyone else being so keen to learn English.
