KS2 Modern Foreign Languages Project
Phase 2: Sept 2006-2008

Good news! The KS2 Modern Foreign Languages Project
is to continue. PHASE 2 to start Sept 2006…

Earlier this year we were delighted to learn that the Welsh Assembly Government was giving the go-ahead for a 2-year extention to the current Primary Project managed by CILT Cymru.

Phase 1 (2003-06) has seen 21 clusters of primary and Secondary schools around Wales successfully working together to provide a modern foreign language to Key Stage 2 pupils. The main findings of the independent Interim report for this phase were most encouraging and can be viewed here. The final report will be available in October 2006.

Phase 2 will begin to look closely at progress of Project pupils as they move through Key Stage 3 and the any subsequent impact at take-up as they reach Key Stage 4. Greater emphasis therefore will be placed on the role of the Secondary schools, both in terms of building on pupils’ prior knowledge and enthusiasm, but also continuing to work with their feeder primaries and subsequent cohorts to ensure the existence of continued effective transition arrangements. This will be a very exciting time as clusters use this opportunity to build on the recommendations of the report from Phase1 whilst decisions are made about the future of primary languages post 2008…
