Triple Literacy: Making the Link

During this action research project into developing literacy skills, CILT Cymru has been supporting schools all over Wales who are undertaking pioneering work.
The joint activity between language teachers at secondary level is helping to raise awareness of the need for language skills across the curriculum, thus boosting the status of languages within secondary schools.
In primary schools, where there is already a whole-school approach to literacy, further collaboration with secondary schools ensures a smooth transition for young language learners. For primary schools involved in the WAG KS2 pilot for MFL, there will be opportunities to further develop strategies which allow learners to make links and gain a greater understanding of the way languages work.

The annual Triple Literacy conference held at Llandrindod Wells on the 22nd of June brought together sponsored schools as well as LEA representatives and literacy coordinators to share and celebrate good practice in this field. To view project schools presentations from the conference click here:

Key note speeches came from Toni Schiavone, director of the Basic Skills Agency in Wales, who talked about current initiatives to develop literacy amongst young people, including the very popular “Read a Million Words in Wales”. For more information on this and other Basic Skills Agency initiatives visit the website here.

Dr Jon Herring, a newly appointed Research Officer for the ESRC Centre for Research on Bilingualism in Theory and Practice, Bangor, provided a very interesting session on using bilingualism as a resource.

Although this action research project will no longer be eligible for a separate grant from CILT Cymru, we hope that you will continue to develop strategies in this field and consider other avenues of funding where appropriate such as through the CILT Cymru COMPACT scheme, GTCW, and NGfL Cymru.

If you are carrying out similar work in your school, we are interested in hearing from you. Please contact Nia Gwyn Jones.
